The School Committee voted 4-3 tonight to hire the Swampscott Superintendent to replace Superintendent Basan Nembirkow, who is retiring after 5 years as Brockton's superintendent

The Brockton School Committee voted 4-3 tonight to hire Dr. Matthew H. Malone as the city's new Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Malone, who currently serves as Superintendent of Schools in Swampscott, will take the helm of the Brockton Public Schools from retiring Superintendent Basan Nembirkow.

"I am very pleased with the selection of Matthew Malone as our new Superintendent of Schools," said Mayor James Harrington, who chairs the eight-member School Committee. "Under Superintendent Nembirkow's leadership, the Brockton Public Schools have expanded educational opportunities for all students and I am confident that Dr. Malone will bring the energy, vision and management skills we need to continue to provide the highest level of education and instruction to the students of the Brockton Public Schools."

Dr. Malone is the Superintendent of Schools in the 2,400-student Swampscott Public Schools, where he manages curriculum, staffing and development for students and staff in five school buildings. A former Marine sergeant, Dr. Malone began his career in education as a paraprofessional and long-term substitute in the Boston Public Schools in 1993. Since then, he has worked as a high school social studies teacher in Boston from 1995 to 1999, as a middle school assistant principal in Duxbury from 1999 to 2000, and as headmaster of Monument High School in South Boston from 2000 to 2003.

Dr. Malone was also employed as a special assistant to the Superintendent of San Diego, CA Schools from 2004 to 2005 before he was named Superintendent of the Swampscott Public Schools in July 2005. He holds a bachelor's degree in history from Suffolk University, a master's degree in secondary education from Boston College and a doctorate in educational administration from Boston College.

During the month of July, Mr. Nembirkow and Dr. Malone will work together to help the new superintendent transition into his new position.

"Matt is an experienced superintendent, so he has the breadth of knowledge and the experience he will need to hit the ground running," Superintendent Nembirkow said.
