History: The Foundation is a non-profit, community-based organization that was created by community members and school district leadership in the summer of 2000. The Brockton Educational Foundation (BEF) was approved as a non-profit organization by the Internal Revenue Service in November, 2000. Its mission is to support the Brockton Public Schools, by enhancing the learning process for all students. Since its inception, it has steadily grown. It now has a substantial asset base, and a successful track record of fund management. In the past couple of years, the Foundation has launched several major initiatives which promise to offer significant value to the Brockton Public Schools and its students. The first is its "Principal for a Day®" program, which is our way of bringing significant business and community leaders into the school system. Our guests spend a day in our schools, shadowing the school principals on a one-on-one basis, gaining a deep insight into the workings of our schools and the rewards and challenges of public education. They then gather as a group to share their observations and insights. The Foundation has invited our guests to form more lasting partnerships with the schools and the District, and we are beginning to see the fruits of that effort. Click here to see a list of business and community leaders who have participated in Principal for a Day®". The second major initiative is our "BPS Innovators" program, which is our internal grant program for Brockton Public School teachers. This new initiative offers our best and brightest teachers funding to help them develop and implement creative new curricula. The grants range from $500 to $1000. Last year we funded ten new programs through this initiative, each of which will touch the lives of Brockton Public School students, enriching their learning experience. For a description of each project we funded, click here. We plan to grow this program with contributions from the larger community, to enable more teachers to develop new curricula. Already, a generous corporate contribution has enabled us to increase substantially the fund for the 2005-2006 academic year. The Foundation believes that the most important ingredient for student success is the quality of the teaching in the classroom. This is the arena in which we hope to dedicate increasing resources, and our BPS Innovators program is an ideal vehicle for our support. Third is our initiative called "Brockton Partners for Excellence," which is our mechanism for including community members in our efforts to support public education in Brockton. Parents, business people and community leaders are all welcome to join. Please help fund the Brockton PIE at the $500 Lead Partner level or the $250 Friend level. The Foundation continues to seek resources for Brockton's public schools available only to tax-exempt non-profits. The Foundation also provides fiscal management services for teachers, administrators and staff members who have great ideas for new, creative projects that will enhance student learning, and who have obtained funding to implement them. The Brockton School System's greatest resource is its teachers and staff, and helping them is central to the foundation's mission. BEF has streamlined procedures for supporting grant applications by its staff, and for use of available funds. Current Initiatives BEF actively seeks resources and support of all kinds for the students of the Brockton Public Schools. The following are examples of initiatives that the Foundation is currently supporting: - Brockton After-school Programs
