The Brockton Public Schools' History and Social Science program, K-8, address the learning standards of the Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Framework. Our program combines and integrates various fields such as United States and World History, geography, economics, civics and government.
The guiding principles of the curriculum emphasize the individuality of the students while connecting their lives to the past and present. Through studies in geography, economics, civics and government, history and the arts and humanities, students learn historical explanations for the differences among individuals and peoples.
Multiple strategies are encouraged in order to broaden the students' global understanding. Learning must be student-centered, experiential, developmental and challenging.
With a view to providing our students the essential skills and attitudes for living in the twenty-first century, our ultimate goal is to enable students to acquire the knowledge, abilities and judgment to continue to learn for themselves; to deliberate responsibly on local, national and international issues; and to understand that we are all individuals whose human and civil rights deserve respect.
